Discover the Diverse Wildlife of South Africa
Nestled in the scenic Amakhala Reserve, Amakhala Bush Lodge is a 5-star haven just 45 minutes east of Port Elizabeth. Surrounded by rolling hills and lush riverine vegetation, the lodge offers a rustic escape with abundant wildlife, including the iconic Big 5. Sundowner canoe safaris and a cheese and wine boat cruise enhance the safari experience. Guests can savour breathtaking views from private plunge pools and indulge in alfresco double showers.
Amakhala Bush Lodge features eight private rooms, each offering en-suite facilities, a private lounge, and climate control. The lodge’s tented and thatched suites provide a luxurious retreat with secluded private viewing decks and intimate plunge pools overlooking a watering point. The spacious interiors boast hot and cold air-conditioning, atmospheric fireplaces, large oval baths, and romantic alfresco double showers. The main lodge offers fine dining, splendid lounge areas, and expansive viewing decks, while the colonial Reed Valley Inn serves as the guest reception for an elegant introduction to the tented accommodations. Twice-daily expeditions by open 4×4 safari vehicles ensure an immersive wildlife experience.
Built in the bush at the top end of an open valley in the reserve, each of the Double Luxury Tents overlook a watering point with sky views. All buildings are thatched roofs, tented walls and wooden floors.
Perched in the reserve’s bush atop an open valley, the Family Luxury Tents offer panoramic views of the watering hole. The main room features a king-size bed with an en-suite bath, while the second room offers twin beds and a private toilet.
Become part of Africa as you experience our Big 5 Safari Adventure on malaria free Amakhala Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape of South Africa..
Included in your stay are morning and evening game drives leaving from your lodge. You will be guided by informative, professional rangers through Amakhala Game Reserve in open Land Rovers. Here you can return to nature and explore the abundant wildlife, the diverse vegetation and the dramatic landscape of the Eastern Cape.
Amakhala Horse Trails offers a unique perspective of the bush: elevated on horseback, riders can enjoy incredible views of the surrounding landscape while gliding easily and quietly across terrain often inaccessible by vehicle. The unobtrusive nature of a horseback safari also allows for incredible animal sightings – riders can get as close as 10 to 15 metres from wildlife such as eland, wildebeest, zebra, hartebeest and giraffe. The trails provide an opportunity to explore 1700 hectares of African bush on horseback, including the chance to canter across open plains, take a slow trot to appreciate the views or walk quietly along secluded river lines..
Amakhala Horse Trails caters for small groups of up to 6 intermediate to experienced riders. Experienced younger riders between 10 and 15 years old may also join, if accompanied by a parent or guardian. Horseback safaris typically last between two to three hours, and the speed of the trail ride is adjusted to the riders’ level of experience. This allows plenty of time for wildlife viewing and finding the perfect spot to rest the horses and enjoy refreshments and snacks.
