Discover the Diverse Wildlife of Thanda Safari Lodge
Set in one of the most pristine wilderness areas left on our planet, Thanda Safari Lodge is nestled in South Africa’s northern KwaZulu Natal, one of Africa’s most luxurious safari destinations. The award-winning private 14,000-hectare Thandi Safari Lodge hosts an unforgettable safari experience, exploring the reserve’s plains, valleys and mountains. The area is home to the Big Five and a plethora of extraordinary wildlife. Thenda Safari Lodge has a unique sense of remoteness, a true spirit of Africa, and is a great example of South African bush embodying a variety of species and rare animals.
Thanda Safari Lodge has nine expansive guest suites, each with a lavish living space, heated plunge pool and an outside resting area overlooking the reserve. Thanda Safari Lodge pays homage to the region’s rich Zulu culture, creating beautiful traditional suites that are circular in design.
Thanda Safari Lodge’s central dining and gathering area includes an inviting and comfortable lounge, expansive deck and library overlooking a waterhole, a private business area, and an impressive wine cellar. All to create a beautiful and memorable stay. To indulge in the rest and relaxation Thanda Safari Lodge has a spa with beautiful views of the reserve. The therapists are trained in a wide range of treatments, including a combination of western techniques and ancient Zulu holistic practices.
The safari drives, bush walks, rhino tracking, cheetah tracking, birding and other bespoke viewing activities are designed to place you in front of the best wildlife the area has to offer for a unique one on one life changing experience, from leopards to elephants and an aim to tick off as many as the 200 or more bird species in the area.
Unique in their design, the nine expansive guest suites each feature an indoor en-suite bathroom, an indoor and outdoor shower, a large private veranda with outdoor seating with beautiful views of the reserve, and a private plunge pool.
While at Thanda Safari Lodge there is no set routine, the wildlife knows the most forgiving times of day, and we take its lead. Early morning, late afternoon and evenings are the prime game viewing times – it’s when the colors are vibrant, the sun is low and spirits are up. With your cameras ready you will see a range of animals including cheetahs, hyaenas, giraffes, warthogs and abundant bird and plant life.
Lead by knowledgeable and friendly guides, you will set out at dawn, when predators are active, our guides are as keen as the guests to discover the riches of each day. Usually, once the sun is high and strong, we retreat with the herds to our midday resting post. Then, as the sun begins to wane again, we head out for the late afternoon to evening, searching for nocturnal wildlife and the action that comes with sunset. But nothing is regimented.
Another huge benefit of staying within the conservancies is that here guests are allowed to appreciate the stunning landscape on foot, peacefully, without the noise of engines. We highly recommend this unforgettable experience. Thanda’s guides and trackers share their extensive knowledge and animal tracking ability with you, as well as ancient Zulu stories of the wild.
Talk to the managers to arrange a good time and location for a walk. Usually early morning or evening is the best time, as the middle of the day is too hot to venture out of the shade. Wear good walking shoes, a hat, and neutral coloured clothing so as not to alarm the wildlife, and take binoculars. Your guide will have water for you.
